Practical Devices Release XM4 Portable Headphone Amp
- by full monty On Oct 09, 2007 - 6:23 PM
|
The Practical Devices XM4 builds on the success of the company's XM3 by adding Bass Boost, and an optional Lithium-Ion FastCharge system. The XM4's robust anodized aluminum case with glossy laser-anodized faceplate houses military-precision resistors, oversized electrolytic and tantalum capacitors, plus an ultra-low distortion gold-socketed amplification chip. Signal to noise ratio (SNR) is a staggering low 100dB, total harmonic distortion (THD) is rated at 0.002% THD, and overall frequency response is from 20Hz to 20kHz. The optional Lithium-Ion FastCharge system gives a healthy 40 hours of battery operation, while requiring only one hour of recharge time using the world-compatible AC adapter. Two front-panel LEDs (one blue, one amber) indicate power and status, and can be dimmed. A front bass boost button gives a +6dB boost at 100Hz, while another front button enables the rear panel's Crossfeed Adjuster, a knob that provides for output from near-stereo to 100% monophonic sound. The amp provides +13dB of gain, but an internal jumper can be user-configured to give an additional boost of +10dB (giving a total of +23dB), which allows the XM4 to effortlessly drive even very-high-impedence high-end headphones.

ISA Diablo Ultra Highend Portable Headphone Amp Pics & Final Specs!
- by full monty On Oct 13, 2006 - 9:46 PM
|
The long-awaited and much anticipated ISA Diablo ultra highend portable headphone amp is now nearing completion and images and final specs have now been released. Designers, LaRocco Audio, have released the following: "I gotta tell ya,….This amplifier has proven to be the most time and emotionally intensive builds that Phil and I have worked on to date. How could that be, you might ask. I mean, what’s so big about a small amp? Well, quite a bit apparently. The concept of the Diablo was set in motion by Duncan of ipastudio.com and member feedback which teamed up with my own interest in a new Pocket amp that is competitive with current offerings in size but with the inclusion of a high fidelity amplifier circuit above what is presently offered on par with its more powerful big brother, the PRII. On the surface many of you may think this is a piece of cake. Even I was wrong in my assumptions as to the complexity of making this happen. Below you can read about functions, topology highlights in reference to the Diablo. It has been many months since anyone has heard anything about this amplifier. So long in fact that it has been referred to as “vaporware” and there is even a site devoted to the proclamation of false claims made by myself in reference to the actual creation of the amp. I am not in this to make something that just pulls money in. We have devoted many hours and much hard work to bring this amplifier into existence. Phil and I have created the most advanced pocket amp on the market in this size factor and audio circuit complexity. In audio design there is always a compromise. The question is, what do we choose to remove and keep to make room? What is possible / impossible? Instead of size and cost being our first motivators, we opted for the audio circuit and designed from there. That was the start of the headaches from the beginning but our redemption in the end." Those interested in pre-ordering one can PM me for further info. Please be aware this is a VERY limited first run and we are not sure when the second run will happen.

Lithium Ion Prismatic Rechargeable battery: The Diablo is NOT a single chip amp that only requires a few milliamps to power for 100+ hours of use. If it was, you could power it with a 9V NiMH or some other low mAH rechargeable battery. It is a miniature power amp like its big brother (PRII). In order for this to function for any time and have any drive capability with anything other than super efficient or sensitive IEM’s and phones, you need Voltage swing for any volume capability not to mention just keeping the Opamp turned on. This unconsidered and possible “foot in mouth” requirement of this amp design turned out to be the most frustrating and scary part of this endeavor. With these batteries, we can expect 50hrs of play time @ 3 hours of charge time.
specs:
1. 2 position Attenuator Switch (Gain)
2. Variable Bass Contour
3. Panorama: Left right - mono - right left
4. Volume
5. Power: on/off Switch
6. 2.5mm X 5.5mm: AC adaptor input for charging
7. Lithium Ion Prismatic Rechargeable battery (50 hours use on 3 hour charge)
8. Fast charge and Standby indicator LED
9. Mini In/Out
10. Internal DC Voltage Regulation
11. True Blue Power On Indicator LED
12. Dimensions 3.5” L X 2.5” W X 0.95” H
13. Custom casing and dials

Go-Vibe v5 Portable Headphone Amp Released
- by full monty On Aug 11, 2006 - 3:01 PM
|
The much loved GO-VIBE portable headphone amp has just been released in version 5. Designer, Norm, ceased production of the reasonably priced little amp a few months ago, much to the chagrin of portable amp enthusiasts everywhere, but has now resumed production with the $75 V5. Norm had this to say about his new release: "As with previous models, the philosophy behind the Go-Vibe is an emphasis on good sound quality rather than gimmicks. There are no noisy charging circuits, no sound robbing buffers, caps or crossfeed circuits and no gimmicky gain switches. With it's high output current it's also well suited to driving both low and high impedance headphones. The Go-Vibe V5 has a light and airy sound with clear mids, a well extended treble and tight, controlled bass." More info below.

"I am having a few little problems with my iPod." - Fun Apple Service Centre Report
- by full monty On Jul 28, 2006 - 6:07 PM
|
This Applecentre, Melbourne report via APPLETALK AUSTRALIA is just great: "In all regards Tuesday seemed to be like any other day: it was busy, and I had about 5 people waiting to speak to me about their broken iPods. After dealing with these customers, the remaining people in Service were a group of private school boys, maybe year 10 or 11. One approached the desk and remarked "I am having a few little problems with my iPod." I hear this almost as often as "my ipod is broken" which just ****s me as a comment, because OBVIOUSLY there is something wrong if you are coming into the service department. Anyway, i asked the guy to get out his iPod so i could see if I could fix it, and if it was under warranty or not. So this 16 year old bloke reaches into his jacket and plonks THIS on my desk: (see imge below)
click the image below to enlarge
Keeping a completely straight face, he remarks how it doesn't seem to play music anymore. Deadpan, I reply that it may need to be updated to the latest version of the iPod software, as this often fixes issues..." READ ON!
